For the love of a starfish

July 27th, 2003 · 1 Comment

Today my mom and a friend stopped by our house, after spending the weekend out on the coast. Grandma returned with a story to tell the girls: They had found a live starfish lying upside down on a beach, its tube feet clogged with rocks. Mom wanted to rescue the creature, and since she did not see any tidepools nearby, she walked out towards the water, to toss it back into the sea. Suddenly “a big wave caught me”, and Mom found herself soaked from the waist down. The rest of the day, spent driving in the car and walking along the coast, she wore wet pants, socks and shoes. All for the love of a starfish.

I thought this was a great picture of my mom: her heart compassionate for all creatures, her desire to heal and help, and her sacrifice to pay the price – in this case rescuing a red starfish and suffering soggy shoes, socks and slacks.

The image comes clearly to my mind…my mom on the beach, choosing to care, cradling the starfish in her hand, walking into the waves…..
thanks, Mom for all your love and for all your sacrifices for us all!
