In Tuesday’s Seattle Times, an article describing the new president of the University of Washington, Mark Emmert, has this quote:
Emmert grew up in Fife near Tacoma…The family attended Fife Presbyterian Church, where Mark Emmert married his high-school sweetheart, DeLaine Smith.
“My greatest accomplishment is staying married,” Emmert joked yesterday.
I don’t think it is a joke: staying married is a great accomplishment!

I absolutely agree. He who is faithful in small things can be faithful in bigger ones. Maintaining a good marriage is a big show of faithfulness and courage and integrity and perseverance – all qualities we’d like to see in our leaders, whether of universities or the nation.
